White Canvas 2015

Jain Animation School organised the 2nd edition of White Canvas fest on 30th November and 1st December 2015. White Canvas 2015 was bigger with more innovative events, double the fun with exciting prizes and goodies to be won. This year the fest was open for students from other colleges across Bangalore and they responded with enthusiasm with about 300 students participating in various events.

As a part of our industry interface initiative, Jain Animation School was thrilled to have Mr. Jagadish B V, Assistant Manager - Talent acquisition from Dhruva Interactive, Bangalore at our campus over the last weekend. He conducted a seminar on a career in game art, sharing a lot of tips and creative art processes. The students and staff alike were excited to be part of this session. He stressed upon how the fundamentals of art is important to establish a successful career in this industry. He inspired the students with a few fantastic show reels and in game cinematic developed at Bangalore. He also showed the work in progress of a few prop designs, emphasizing the students to work hard in order to achieve that top notch quality. The session concluded with a few game trailers that were a welcome explosion of colors on the screen.

White Canvas: Jain Animation School Fest was held on 25th and 26th August and it had events to suit different interests. The students of wanted to give a platform, to all the students of various departments, where they could express themselves and showcase their talent.

Every year Jain Animation School (JAS) celebrates Independence Day in its own unique way and this year we decided to celebrate the freedom of art. The students of JAS made a 20x20 feet art installation. They created a huge map of India which was decorated with different forms of artwork. The films made by the second year B.Sc. Animation students were screened for the department. The second year students organized a movie quiz for the students.

The first year B.Sc. Animation students had an orientation program on 19th and 21st June, 2014. The academic head - Satish B addressed the students and told them about the orientation program which was handled by Somashekar B K (2D Faculty).

The students were engaged in different activities that required them to use their imagination and creativity. The first task that they had to do was to make clothes from old newspapers. Students seemed quite excited and came up with interesting ideas varying from folk to modern styles. They understood character designing through this task. The students created a human skeleton using old newspapers and then joined the different parts together.

The next task was paper quilling. Once they were taught the technique, they were able to use it to make their own designs. They made beautiful designs of scenery, animals etc. and made their creations come alive.

DreamWorks Animation. Names of a lot of famous animated films pop into your head when you hear the name of this studio. The students of Jain Animation School (JAS) had the privilege to meet someone who has been a part of DreamWorks since it was founded eighteen years ago in 1995. Shelley Page works as the Head of International Outreach at DreamWorks and she interacts with schools and universities all over the world. She visited the Jain Animation School campus this month and mesmerized everyone with everything that she had in store for us.

Jain Animation School (JAS) organized a talk on VFX and 3D animation in the JGI Knowledge Campus. The speaker for the event was Wil Braithwaite who is the Senior Applied Engineer at NVIDIA, which is an American global technology company. Braithwaite spoke about the evolution of VFX and 3D animation. He shared the videos and images of the projects that he has worked on and also shared some interesting anecdotes.

Jain Animation School celebrated Independence Day and displayed artworks in the JGI Knowledge Campus. Jain Animation School students made a rangoli and a thermocol carving which were displayed in the third floor quadrangle. They also made an origami tree which was displayed in the ground floor. All these artworks were based on the symbols that represent India. Individual artworks made by the Jain Animation School students were displayed in the animation department. FRAMES 2013 was held on 14th August, 2013 in JGI Knowledge Campus. The event was held to screen the fiction films made by the second year B.Sc. Animation students. The 4 fiction films were screened for an audience comprising of staff members, teachers, students and parents. Everyone liked the films and all the dignitaries appreciated the hard work done by the students.

The students of Jain Animation School celebrated the 100 years of Hindi cinema on 29th May, 2013. The students made a 3D collage consisting of the actors, directors, dialogues and symbols that represent the Hindi film industry.

Manoj Menon reinforced this thought in his session at Jain Animation School. In this show and tell session which was held on 12th January, 2013, Menon spoke about how a concept artist must imagine characters the way a common man does and then add his creative touch to it. The session was about the process of character design, visual development, and story creation. Students from different animation institutes attended the session and interacted with Menon. Menon showed that the foundation of animation is basic shapes and how different characters can be created using them. He also gave an insight into designing characters for 3D animation. He gave examples of animation films and series which the students could relate to. He compared animation with feature films and discussed how animation in India has a long way to go but the future looks bright. The session was concluded with a Q and A session which gave the students a better idea of the animation industry in India.

The Independence Day event at Jain Animation School was held on 14th August, 2012. The event began with the lighting of the lamp followed by an invocation song, a classical dance, and some musical performances. The students displayed their artworks in the gallery. The students made a 5-feet-high paper mâché sculpture; a 13 x 10 feet rangoli made with rock salt and poster colours; and a 10 x 7 floor artwork made with poster colours. The students also made artworks with thermocol and poster colours. All these artworks were based on the spirit of independence and freedom. A video was screened which conveyed the meaning of freedom according to the people of India. Another highlight of the event was the launch of Avidhi, which is the animation fest of Jain Animation School. The Avidhi launch posters were displayed all over college and the Avidhi teaser was screened at the event. The members of Avidhi were announced and awarded with badges. The event came to an end with the national anthem.

The inauguration of the new academic year was held at Jain Animation School on 16th June, 2012. All the students and their parents were present for the occassion. The event was graced by the presence of our Chairman, Dr. R. Chenraj Jain. Also gracing the event were, Dr. Eswaran Iyer, Dean & Director - Commerce & Management, Jain University, Dr. B T Venkatesh, Director & Controller of Examination, Jain University, Mr. Nandagopal, Head - TEL and Dr. Chudamani Nandagopal, Dean, Humanities & Social Sciences, Jain University. The event started by welcoming the new students aboard and telling them about Jain Animation School and Jain University. The event showcased the documentaries, live action films, and animation films made by the senior students. The event also showcased all the creative works made by the students in the form of a showreel. The art works made by the students were displayed in the Art Gallery, which also featured a wall decoration based on the theme "Deforestation" made by the first year B.Sc. Animation students. The Chairman addressed the students and their parents at the end of the event, sharing his experiences and spoke about the scope of animation. While interacting with the students, he appreciated the films and the artworks and also gave valuable suggestions.

Jain Animation School (JAS) started a Summer Camp for children this year at Jain Knowledge Campus in Jayanagar. The Summer Camp lasted for a month and it was conducted for children aged between 8 - 14 years. The aim of the Summer Camp was to teach the children the basics of animation in a fun and interactive way. The children learnt to draw simple things in a methodical manner. The Summer Camp consisted of many activities like drawing cartoon characters, T-shirt painting, mask making, flip book animation, comic book, clay modeling etc. At the end of the Summer Camp, an exhibition was held to display their creations and all of them were awarded a certificate of participation.

Jain Animation School kick started the holiday festivities with a Christmas tree decoration at JGI Knowledge Campus, Jayanagar 9th Block, followed by a drawing competition and display of student’s Art Gallery.

As part of the celebration, a Creative Drawing Competition was organized on the theme – “CORRUPTION – EXPRESS YOUR THOUGHTS”. There was active participation from the students of PUC from the Jayanagar, V.V.Puram and J.C. road campuses. The day saw a huge pool of talent in terms of pencil sketching, water colors, charcoal, crayons and other mediums.
